among the following four compounds
(i) phenol (ii) methylphenol
(iii) meta - nitrophenol (iv) para - nitrophenol
the acidity order is:

A

(iv)gt(iii)gt(i)gt(ii)

B

(iii)gt(iv)gt(i)gt(ii)

C

(i)gt(iv)gt(iii)gt(ii)

D

(ii)gt(i)gt(iiii)gt(iv)

The correct Answer is:
A

In substituted phenols, presence of electron withdrawing groups increases the acidity whereas presence of electron releasing groups decreases the acidity as compared to phenol. Further, among the meta and p-nitrophenols, para is more acidic as the presence of `-NO_(2)` group at p-position stabiolizes the phenoxide ion to a greater extent tthan when it is present at the m-position. hence, the correct order of acidity is:
p-nitrophenol (iv)gt m-nitrophenol (iii)gtphenol (i) gtmethylphenol (ii) i.e., option (a) is correct.
