Why is benzoic acid less soluble in water than acitic acid?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to polar nature of the C=O and O-H parts of COOH group, both `CH_(3)COOH and C_(6)H_(5)COOH` form H bonds with water. But due to large hydrocarbon part the extent of H-bonding is much lower in benzoic acid than in acetic acid and hence benzoic acid is much less soluble in water than acetic acid.

Why is benzoic acid a stronger acid than acetic acid ?

Does benzoic acid also exist as dimer in water ?

pK_a value of m-hydroxybenzoic acid is less / more than that of benzoic acid.

Assertion : Benzoic acid is stronger acid than acetic acid. Reason : K_(a) for benzoic acid is 6.5xx10^(-5) and for acetic acid is 1.74xx10^(-5) .

Explain the following: (i) Benzoic acid is weeker acid than acetic acid. (ii) Chloroacetic acid is stronger acid than acetic acid.
