How do yout explain the presence of five `-OH` groups in glucose molecule?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

On acetylation with acetic anhydride in presence of pyridine or a few drops of conc. `H_2SO_4`. It is converted into glucose pnetacetate.
`CH_(2)OH-underset("Glucose")((CHOH)_(4))-CHOoverset((CH_3CO)_(2)O //"pyridine")underset("Acetylation")to CH_(3)COOCH_(2)-underset("Glucose pentaacetate")((CHOCOCH_3)_(4))-CHO`
This confirms the presence of five `-OH` groups in glucose molecule.
