Calculate the amount of water (g) produced by the combustion of 16 g of methane

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The balanced chemical equation for the combustion of methane is :
`underset(" = 16 g")underset("1 mole")(CH_(4))+2O_(2)rarrCO_(2)+underset(=2xx18=36g)underset("2 moles")(2H_(2)O)`
Thus, 1 mole of `CH_(4)` on combustion produces 2 moles of `H_(2)O`
But 1 mole of `CH_(4)=12+4xx1=16g`
1 mole of `H_(2)O=2+1+16=18g`
`therefore" 2 moles of "H_(2)O=2xx18g=36g`
Hence, 16 g of `CH_(4)` on complete combustion produce `H_(2)O=36g`
