Both the thin and thick segments of the ascending limb of loop of Henle transport NaCl out to the interstitial fluid. What is difference in their respective mode of transport?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the descending limb of loop of Henle, because of high osmotic pressure of medullary extracellular fluid, `Na^(+)` enters the tubule. In the ascending limb of loop of Henle, `Na^(+), K^(+)` and some `Cl^(-)` ions are reabsorbed actively.

Assertion A: The renal fluid becomes increasingly concentrated when it flows down in the descending limb of loop of Henle towards the inner medulla but its concentration decreases in the ascending limb when it flows towards the cortex Reason R: The descending limb of the loop of Henle reabsorbs water, the ascending limb is impermeable to water but salts are reabsorbed

The high osmolarity of the renal medulla is maintained by all of the following except - I. Diffusion of salt from the ascending limb of the loop of Henle II. Active transport of salt from the upper region of the ascending limb III. The spatial arrangement of juxtamedullary nephrons IV. Diffusion of urea from the collecting duct V.
