PEP is primary `CO_(2)` acceptor in

A

`C_(4)` plants

B

`C_(3)` plants

C

`C_(2)` plants

D

both `C_(3)` and `C_(4)` plants.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

In `C_(4)` plants, initial fixation of `CO_(2)` or carboxylation occurs in mesophyll cells. The chloroplasts of mesophylls cells possess enzyme PEP carboxylase (or PEP cae) for initial fixation of `CO_(2)`. The primary acceptor of `CO_(2)` is phosphoenol pyruvate or PEP. It cobines with `CO_(2)` in the presence of PEP carboxylase (or PEP case) to form oxaloacetic acid or oxaloacetate (O A A).
