On what ground can you say that scandium `(Z=21)` is a transition element but zinc `(Z=30)` is not?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

On the basis of incompletly filled `3`d orbitals of Scandium , `[Ar]^(18) 3d^(1) 6s^(2)` and completely filled `3`d orbitals of Zn,`[Ar]^(18) 3d^(1) 4s^(2)`, they are consider transition and non-transition element respectively.
