A fixed mass of gas at STP occupies a certain volume. The gas is heated and allowed to expand to a double its volume with its pressure doubled. What can you say about the average kinetic energy of the gas molecules?

Text Solution

To obtain doubled volume with doubled pressure, the temperature in kelvin must be four time the volume in STP (`(PV)/(T)=`constant). Since the average kinetic energy proportions to the temperature linearly, the kinetic energy of the gas is four times before heating up.
