Two 100W bulbs one having the tungsten f...

Two 100W bulbs one having the tungsten filament and the other carbon filament are joined in series with a power supply. How will their brightness change as time passes on .

Text Solution

Initially both will glow equally bright because both have some resistance . But as time passes on , because of heat dissipation , temperature of filaments increases. The resistance of tungsten filament increases whereas that of carbon filament increases. At any instant , the current flowing through both bulbs will be same. Hence from the formula `P = l^(2) xx R ` , the power consumed by tungsten filament will be larger and hence their bulb will glow brighter.
