Let `S` be the set of all rational numbers of the form `m/n` , where `m in Z` and `n=1,\ 2,\ 3.` Prove that * on `S` defined by `a`*`b=a b` is not a binary operation.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let `S={m/n:m inZ,n` takes the values`1,2,3}`
Let `x=1/2`,`y=1/3` where `m=1`,`n=2,3`
`implies xy=1/2xx1/3=1/6` where `6!inS`
Hence * is not a binary operation on S.
