The number which exceeds its square b...

The number which exceeds its square by the greatest possible quantity is `1/2` (b) `1/4` (c) `3/4` (d) none of these

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let a function be,
`f(x)=x−x^2`, we have to find the maximum value of `f(x).`
For this differentiating `f(x)` we get `f′(x)=1−2x`,
Equating this to `0` will give us -`1−2x=0`
`\therefore x=1/2`
