Assertion : Species with low genetic variability are more vulnerable to disease, predators or other environmental challenges.

A

If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

B

If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

C

If assertion is true but reason is false.

D

If both assertion and reason are false.

The correct Answer is:
A

Species with low genetic variability are generally at significantly greater risk of extinction than the species with more genetic variability, simply because they have a more limited arsenal with which to respond to the varieties of environmental change. Species with extremely low genetic variability are particularly vulnerable towards a new disease, predator or other environmental challenges, e.g., lack of genetic variability in the African cheetah (Acinonys jubatus) has been considered to be a significant factor contributing towards decline of cheetah population.

Assertion: Variations are important for the process of evolution. Reason: Meiosis increases the genetic variability in the population of organisms from one generation ot the next.

Assertion: Species is a genetically closed system. Reason: Because the reproductive isolation constitutes the most important boundary between different species.

Assertion : Predatos maintain species diversity. Reason : Predators reduce the intensity of competition among competing prey species.

Assertion: Prey species have evolved various defences to lessen the impact of predation. Reason: Some species of insects and frogs are cryptically-coloured (camouflageed) to avoid being detected easily by the predator

Assertion : At low density, variables of gases P, V and T follows the equation PV=muRT Reason : At low density real gases are more closely to ideal gases

Assertion: The process of extinction is random. Reason: Any species not adapted to environmental con- ditions cannot survive.

Assertion: A community with more species is more stable than that with less species. Reason: More the number of species, lesser the variation in the total biomass production year after year.

Assertion : The Nile perch introduced into lake Victoria in east Africa led to the extinction of an ecologically unique assemblage of more than 200 species of cichlid fish in the lake. Reason : When alien species are introduced deliberately for economic or other uses, they often become invasive and cause extinction of indigenous species.
