Assertion : Over-exploitation of a species reduces the size of its population eventually leading to its extinction.
Reason : Steller's sea cow is a large, herbivorous, terrestrial mammal which is on the verge of extinction due to over exploitation.

A

If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

B

If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

C

If assertion is true but reason is false.

D

If both assertion and reason are false.

The correct Answer is:
C

Over exploitation or over-harvesting of a plant or an animal species reduces the size of its population leading to its extinction. Over-exploitation is one of the major causes threatening global biodiversity. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamulis gigas) was a large, herbivorous, marine mammal (largest member of the order-Sirenia) which had been discovered in 1741 and became extinct by 1768. It is one of the few megafaunal mammal species to have died out during the historical period. It was over-harvested for food, for skin, for its valuable subcutaneous, fat, etc.

Read the following text and answer the following question on the basis of the same : Excessive exploitation of species , whether a plant or animal reduces the size of its population , so it becomes vulnerable to extinction . Such as Dodo and passenger pigeon have become extinct due to over exploitation by humans . Thus the world is facing accelerated rates of species extinctions , largely due to human interference . Assertion : Pollution reduces species biodiversity . Reason : Spillover of oil in sea cause death of serval marine animals .

Assertion (A): Many species like Stellar's sea cow, passenger pigeon, etc., became extinct due to over exploitation. Reason(R) : Over exploitation is a major cause of biodiversity loss.

Assertion (A): For a first order reaction, half-life period is independent of initial concentration of the reacting species.
