How does the metallic and non-metalic character vary on moving from left to right in a period?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

On moving from left to right in a period the number of valence electronic increases by one at each succeeding element but the number of shells remains the same .As a result the nuclear charge increases and the tendency of the element of lose electrons decreases and hence the metallic character decreases as we move from left to right in a period . conversely ,as the nuclear charge increase the tendency of the element to gain element increases and hence the non- metallic increases from left to ritght in a period.
Alternatively metallic character decreases and non- metallic character increases as we move from left to right in a period. It is due to increases in ionization enthalpy and negative electron gain enthaply.

Write the number of periods and groups in the Modern Periodic Table. How does the metallic character of elements vary on moving from left to right in a period, and

Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : Metallic character decreases and non-metallic character increases on moving from left to right in a period. Reason (R) : It is due to increase in ionisation enthalpy and decrease in electron gain enthalpy, when one moves from left to right in a period. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
