Assertion : Contribuition of CO(2), CH(4...

Assertion : Contribuition of `CO_(2), CH_(4), CFCs " and " N_(2)O` towards greenhouse effect is respectively 60%, 6 %, 14 % and 20 %.
Reason : Greenhouse gases are radioactively active gases which prevent the short wavelength radiations emitted by earth to escape into space.

The correct Answer is:
D

The gases which are transparent to solar radiation but retain and partially reflect back long wave heat radiations are called greenhouse gases (GHGs). Greenhouse gases are essential for keeping the earth warm and hospitable. The various greenhouse gases are `CO_(2)` (warming effect 60%) , `CH_(4)` (effect 20%), chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs (14%) and nitrous oxide `(N_(2)O, 6%)`. Others of minor significance are water vapours and ozone.

CO_(2), CH_(4), N_(2)O and CFCs are called greenhouse gases because they can absorb:

Assertion Greenhouse effect is due to thick layer of CO_(2) . Reason CO_(2) acts as the glass panels of a greenhouse allowing the sunlight to filtre through, but preventing the heat from being re-radiated in outer space.

Assertion CO_(2) is the main pollutant causing greenhouse effect. Reason Incomplete combustion of fossil fuels in automobiles releases 80% of CO_(2) .

Assertion: CO_(2) and water vapour present in the atmosphere absorb the re-emitted IR radiations from the earth's surface and warm the air. Reason: For greenhouse effect, presence of green plants is essential.

CO_2 and H_2 O absorbs strongly in the infrared rrgion and its presence in the atmospheere dectrases the loss fo heat form the enrth by radistiion . This global warming is called the greenhouse effect (other gases , including the oxides of nitraongen form car exhauset freons from aerosols and refrigeratirs and methane from bacteria in the soil and in the rument cows , also add to the reeenhouse effect ). The concentration fo atmospheric CO_2 has increased by 10% . The is rsulting in the increase in the mean temperature fo the earth by 2. 5^@ C , varying form 2^@ C t the equlator to 4^@ C at the poles . This could have dramatic effects on the climate. Which of the following is growing at a fastre rate than CO_2 and thus responsible for the greenhouse effect ?

The equilibrium constant (K_(p)) for the reaction 2CO_((g))underset(larr)(rarr)2CO_(2(g)) is 1.4xx10^(90) at 25^(@)C . Given this enormous value, why does not CO convert totally into CO_(2) in the troposphere?.
