Add the rational numbers: (i)`(31)/(-4)` and `(-5)/8` (ii) `5/(36)` and `(-7)/(12)`

(i) Add `(31/-4)` and `(-5/8)`
`=(-31/4)+(-5/8)`

Taking LCM, we get LCM as `8`

`=(-62-5)/8`
`=-67/8`

We get the answer as `-67/8`.

(ii) Add `5/36` and `(-7/12)`
`=5/36+(-7/12)`

Taking LCM, we get LCM as `36`

`=(5-21)/36`
`=-16/36`
Simplify by dividing the numerator and denominator by `4`
`=-4/9`
We get the answer as `-4/9`.
