When the microsporess reach maturity, the male cone elongates considerably and rapidly the scales separate from one another so that sporangia are exposed. The sporangia lose water and with the loss of water from its cells the exothecium shrinks. The sporangia thus open by a slit on its outer face. The spores fall out. The liberated spores are dispersed by wind.
