The sports boot for soccer and hockey have studs on their soles. Why?

The studs reduce the area in contact between the feet of the player and the ground. AS the weight of the player acts over a smaller area, the preasses on the ground with increaseed pressure. As a result, the feet of the player sink into the turf on the play ground and grip the surface more firmly. This enables him to run about on the ground without slipping.
