Statement-I : Carbon reduction for Al(2)...

Statement-I : Carbon reduction for `Al_(2)O_(3)`, is very difficult.
Statement-II : Al forms carbide the `Al_(4)C_(3)` which produces propyne when reactes with `H_(2)O`.

A

If both statement -I & Statement-II are true & the Statement-II is correct explaination of the statement-I.

B

If both Statement-I & Statement-II are true but Statement-II is not a correct explainatin of Statement-I.

C

If Statement-I is True but the Statement-II is False

D

If the Statement-I is False but the Statement-II is True

The correct Answer is:
C

Carbon reduction of `Al_(2)O_(3)` occurs above `2000^(@)C`
M.P. of Al : `660^(@)C`
B.P. of Al : `2467^(@)C`
hence some Al goes into vapour phase also apart of liberated Al combines with liberated carbon and form `Al_(4)C_(3)`,therefore carbon reduction of `Al_(2)O_(3)` is difficult
`Al_(4)C_(3)+12H_(2)Oto4Al(OH)_(3)+3CH_(4)`
