Discuss the variation of electric potential due to positive and negative point charges with distance from a charge.

Text Solution

Electric potential at a distance r from a charge +q,
`V = (+q)/(4 pi epsilon_(0)r)`
Electric potential at a distance r
from a charge `-q , V = (-q)/(4 pi epsilon_(0)r)`
fig. shows the variation of V with r. From the nature of the curves it can be said that the electric potential gradually decreases as the distance from charge +q increases and it gradually increases as the distance from charge -q increase.
