The maximum power rating of a 20Omega re...

The maximum power rating of a `20Omega` resistor is 2.0kW. (that is this is the maximum power the resistor can dissipate (as heat) without melting or changing in some other undesirable way). Would you connect his resistor directly across a 300V d.c. source of negligible internal resistance?

If the resistor is connected dirctly with a 300 dc source, its power would be ,
`P=(V^(2))/(R)=(300)^(2)/(20)=4500w=4.5kW`
Since , this power is greater than 2 kW , so the resistor should not be directly connected to a 300 V dc source .
