Polaroid films are produced by spreading ultramicroscopic crystals of herapathite on a thin sheet of nitrocellulse. The crystals are placed on the film by a special device is such a way that the optic axes of all the crystals are parallel. These crystals are highle dichoric and absorb one of the double refracted beams completely. The other refracted beam is transmitted from the crystals.

The light from a clear blue portion of the sky shows a rise and fall of intensity when viewed through a polaroid which is rotated. Describe, with the help of a suitable diagram, the basic phenomenom/process which occurs to explain this observation.

How does an upolarised light incident on a polaroid get polarised? Describe briefly, with the help of a necessary diagram, the polarisation of ligtht by reflection from a transparent medium.

Show that for refraction of light through a parallel glass slab, the incident ray and the emergent ray are parallel to each other. Or, With the help of a diagram show how in case of a rectangular glass slab, when light is refracted by the two parallel faces of the slab, deviation between angle of incidence and angle of refractive is zero.

Two beams, A and B, of plane polarized light with mutually perpendicular planes of polarization are seen through a polaroid. From the position when the beam A has maximum intensity (and beam B has zero intensity), a rotation of polaroid through 30^(@) makes the two beams appear equally bright. If the initial intensities of the two beams are I_(A) and I_(B) respectively, then I_(A)// I_(B) equals:

When unpolarised light is incident on two crossed polarisers, no light it transmitted. A student asserted that if a third polariser is added transmission of light will occur. Does this make sense? How can adding a third filter increase transmission?

Show how light reflected from a transparent medium gets polarised. Hence deduce Brewster's law.

Unplarised light is passed through a polaroid P_(1) . When this polarised beam passes through another polaroid P_(2) and if the pass axis of P_(2) makes angle theta with the pass axis of P_(1) , then write the expression for the polarised beam passing through P_(2) . Draw a plot showing the variation of intensity when theta varies from 0 to 2pi .
