The two ions A^(+)andB^(-) have radii 10...

The two ions `A^(+)andB^(-)` have radii 102 and 200 pm respectively. Predict the coordination number of `A^(+)` and crystal structure of compound AB.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`(r_(A^(+)))/(r_(B^(-)))=102/200=0.51`. This value of radius ratio lies in the range 0.414 - 0.732. Therefore, `A^(+)` ions will occupy octahedral holes in the ccp array formed by `B^(-)` ions. The coordination number of `A^(+)` ion will be 6. The coordination number of `B^(-)` ion will be also be 6 as formula unit of the compound contains as many cation as anion. Considering all these, it can be predicted that the crystal structure of AB is rock-salt type.
