For SrF(2), the radius of Sr^(2+) is 1.1...

For `SrF_(2)`, the radius of `Sr^(2+)` is 1.13Å, and that of `F^(-)` is 1.35Å. What structure is `SrF_(2)` likely to assume?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`(r_(Sr^(2+)))/(r_(F^(-)))=1.13/1.35=0.837`. This value of radius ratio falls in the range `0.732 - 1.00`, indicating `Sr^(2+)` ions should occupy cubic holes. But, in practice `SrF_(2)` is found to assume fluorite structure, in which `Sr^(2+)` ions form ccp array and the tetrahedral holes in the structure occupied by `F^(-)` ions.
