Radii of `K^(+)andO^(2-)` ions are 1.51Å and 1..62Å, respectively. Predict the structure of `K_(2)O`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`(r_(K^(+)))/(r_(O^(2-)))=1.51/1.62=0.93`. As this value of radius ratio lies in the range `0.732-1.00`, one can expect `K^(+)` ion should occupy cubic holes formed by packing of oxide ions. However in reality `K_(2)O` is found to have an anti fluorite structure. In `K_(2)O" "O^(2-)` ions form ccp aray and `K^(+)` ions occupying all the octahedral holes in the array.
