A cubic unit cell with an edge length of a cm consists of identical particles. The mass of each particle is m g and the density of the unit cell is `(4m)/a^(3)g*cm^(-3)`. Identify the type of the cubic unit cell.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The edge length of the cubic unit cell is a cm.
Therefore, the volume of the unit cell will be `a^(3)cm^(3)`.
Mass of each constituent particles is mg.
Let, there is Z number of atoms present per unit cell.
Therefore, the density of the unit cell will be `(mZ)/a^(3)g*cm^(-3)`
As given, the density of the unit cell is `(4m)/a^(3)g*cm^(-3)`
Thus, Z = 4 which corresponds fcc unit cell.
