How can you distinguish a metal and an ionic solid on the basis of their electrical conductance?

(1) In solid state, an ionic compound cannot conduct electricity, while a metal can. (2) For a metal, free electrons in it are the current carriers, on the other hand, for an electrolyte in its molten or dissolved state, current carriers are its ions.
