How many types of close-packing are possible when identical spheres pack together in a plane? Which one of these represents the highest efficiency in close-packing in two dimensions? Mention coordination number in each of these close-packing.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Two types of close-packing of identical spheres are possible in two dimensions-square close-packing and hexagonal close-packing. Between these two, hexagonal arrangement represents the closest-packing. Coordination number in square close-packing is 4, it is 6 in hexagonal close-packing.
