Give the significance of a 'lattice point'.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A real crystal can be represented by a crystal lattice which is defined as the three-dimensional array of identical points in space. A point in the crystal lattice is called the lattice point. The lattice point in the crystal lattice of a real crystal represent the positions of the structural units (atoms, ions or molecules) of which the real crystal is built. Like the structure unit in a real crystal, each lattice point in a crystal lattice has the identical environment. A real crystal generates from its lattice when the lattice points of the lattice are substituted by the structural units of the crystal.
