What type of substances would make better permanent magnets, ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic? Justify.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ferromagnetic substances would make better permanent magnet. In solid state, ferromagnetic substance contains a large number of small regions called domains. These domains consist of atoms or ions making up the substance and behave like tiny magnets. In absence of magnetic field, domains are oriented randomly but in presence of magnetic field they get oriented in the direction of the magnetic field and the substance gets magnetised. This alignment of magnetic moments of the domains does not undergo any change even when the applied magnetic field id removed. Thus, a ferromagnetic substance becomes a permanent magnet.
