How can you determine the atomic mass of an unknown metal having cubic crystal structure if you know its density and the dimension of its unit cell? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The density `(rho)` of a metal forming cubic crystal structure is related to the dimension of the crystal's unit cell by the equation, `rho=(ZxxM)/(Nxxa^(3))`, where, M = molar mass of the metal, N = Avogadro's number, Z = number of atoms per unit cell and a = edge length.
`therefore" "M=(rhoxxNxxa^(3))/Z`
If the values of `rho`, a and Z are known, we can determine the density `(rho)` of the metal by using this equation.
