Why are liquids and gases categorised as fluids?

A fluid is a substance that flows when a shearing force is applied on it. The term fluid is used to mean either a gas or a liquid as these substances have flow property. The molecules in a gas or in a liquid can easily slip and slide over one another and hence, can move from one placed to another.
