Which of the following oxide is the most acidic in nature?
`Al_(2)O_(3),SO_(2),SO_(3),P_(4)O_(10) and CO`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Out of the elements Al, S, P and C, S lies at the extreme right of the periodic table and so it is the most electronegative. Again in `SO_(3)` the oxidation state of S is the highest (+6). Hence, `SO_(3)` is the most acidic compound. It reacts with water to give a strong acid.
