Valency of the element M is 5 when oxygen is considered as the standard where as valency of M is 3 when chlorine is considered as the standar. Since, oxygen based valency of an element is equal to its group number, the group to which M belongs is VA(15). element M is a non-metal as it is located in group VA of the periodic table.
