(i) Which one is more stable between BC ...

(i) Which one is more stable between `BC l_(3) and TiCl_(3)` and why?
(ii) What is oxidation state of Zn in Zn-Hg?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Because of poor shielding effect by the inner d-and f-electrons. The inert pair effect is maximum for Tl. Thus the most stable oxidation state of Tl is +1 and not +3. therefore `TlCl_(3)` is unstable. B does not exhibit inert pair effect and thus, `BC l_(3)` is stable.
(ii) +3.
