Formulas of oxide and chloride of an element A are `A_(2)O_(5)` and `AC l_(3)` respectively. Which group of the mendeleev's periodic table will the element belong to? State whetehr it is a metal or a non-metal.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Taking oxygen as standar, the valency of the element A is 5 and taking chlorine as standard, the valency of A is 3. since oxygen-based valency (B-chlorine-based valency) is same as that of the group number of the element. The element will be of group-VA in mendeleev's periodic table. thus, it is a non-metal.
