Which one is more basic and why-mGo & `Al_(2)O_(3)`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

MgO is more basic than `Al_(2)O_(3)`. Mg&Al are elements of group-11A and IIIA of period-3 respectively. Since in a periodic table, metallic property decreases along a period from left to right, the metallic property of Mg is greater than that of Al. again the oxide of an element with more metallic character is more basic than that will less metallic character. thus, basic character of MgO will be more than that of `Al_(2)O_(3)`.
