Mention the importance of the terms 'ground state' and 'isolated gaseous atom' used in the definition of ionisation potential or electronegativity.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ground state is referred to as lowest energy-level. In ground state the atom neither accepts nor donates electron. When the gaseous atom is in isolated state, its ionisation potential or electron affinity is not affected by the other atoms.
