Bond angle in H(2)O is greater than that...

Bond angle in `H_(2)O` is greater than that of `H_(2)S`- explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both `H_(2)O and H_(2)S` have a tetrahedral geometry. Since ip-bp repulsions are greater than bp-bp repulsions, there molecules attain a distorted tetrahedral geometry, where H-X-H (X=O or S) bond angles are less than normal tetrahedral angle of `109^(@)28'`. due to higher elecrtronegativity if central O-atom than S-atom, bp-bp repulsion is greater in case of O-H bond. hence, bond angle of `H_(2)O` is greater than `H_(2)S`.

This question has Statement I and Statement II. Of the four choices given after the Statements, choose the one that best describes the two Statements. Statement - I: The van der Waals constant ‘a’ of H_2O is greater than that of C_6H_6. Statement - II: The intermolecular force of H_2O is greater than C_6H_6 due to formation of intermolecular hydrogen bond.
