Arrange the following molecules/ions in ...

Arrange the following molecules/ions in order of decreasing H-N-H bond angle and explain the order.
`NH_(3),NH_(4)^(+),NH_(2)^(-)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NH_(3)` has one lone paiir and 3 bond pairs, `NH_(4)^(+)` has four bond pairs and `NH_(2)^(-)` has two lone pairs and two bond pairs. According to VSEPR theory since the repulsions follow the order: `lp-lp gt lp-bpgtbp-bp`, the bond angles (N-N-H) decrease in the order:
`NH_(4)^(+) gt NH_(3) gt NH_(2)^(-)`.
