Explain why the formation of a pi-bond i...

Explain why the formation of a `pi`-bond is not possible between a `p_(y) and a_(x)`-orbital.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`p_(x) and p_(y)` orbitals are mutually perpendicular. `pi`-bonds are formed by lateral overlap of two parallel p-orbitals. Since lateral overlap is not possible between two mutually perpendicular orbitals, a `pi`-bond is not posible between a `p_(y) and` a `p_(z)` orbital.
