If the electronic configuration of atom ...

If the electronic configuration of atom is `1s^(2)`, comment on the stability of `A_(2)` molecule and `A_(2)^(+)` ion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electronic configuration of `A(1s^(2))` and M.O. electornic configuration of `A_(2)&A_(2)^(+)`:
`A_(2):(sigma_(1s))^(2)(sigma_(1s)^(**))^(2)" "A_(2)^(+):(sigma_(1s))^(2)(sigma_(1s)^(**))^(1)`

Higher the bond order, higher is the bond dissociation enthalpy and greater is the enthalpy. hence stability of `A_(2)^(+) gt A_(2)`- Thus, `A_(2)` will have no existence.
