In `SF_(4)` molecule, the lone pair of electrons occupies an equatorial position, rather than axial position, in the overal trigonal bipyramidal arrangement. Wy?

Depending on the position occupied by the lone pair, two structures of `SF_(4)` are possible.

In (a), there are three lonepair-bond pair repulsion at `90^(@)` whereas in (b0 there are onl two lone pair-bond pair repulsions at `90^(@)`. hence (b) is more stable than (a). hence the lone pair occupies the equatorial position in `SF_(4)` molecule.
