Boiling pont of hydrogen fluride is maximum among all the halogen acid-explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Fluorine is the smallest and themost electronegative element. Hence F atom in HF molecule forms strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds. On the other hand, since Cl, Br and I atoms are larger and less electronegative than F, their molecules are held by weak van der waals forces. as hydrogen bond is stronger than the van der waals forces, more energy is required to break the intermolecular hydrogen bonds of the associated HF molecules. therefore the boiling point of HF is much higher than those of theother halogen acids. the boiling point of halogen acid follow the order: `HF gt HI gt HB r gt HCl`.
