The bond angle in NF(3)(102.3^(@)) is sm...

The bond angle in `NF_(3)(102.3^(@))` is smaller than `NH_(3)(107.2^(@))`. This is because of

A

large size of F compared to H

B

large size of N compared to F

C

opposite polarity of N in the two molecules

D

small size of H compared to N

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

In `NF_(3)` molecules, the N-F bond pair is drawn more towards the more electronegative F-atom. But in `NH_(3)` molecule, the N-H bond is drawn more towards the more electronegative N-atom, therefore, the extent of bp-bp repulsion in `NH_(3)` is more than that in `NF_(3)`. As a consequence, bond angle in `NH_(3)(107.2^(@))` is greatert han that in `NF_(3)(102.3^(@))`.
