The rate of diffusion of a gas is 2.92 t...

The rate of diffusion of a gas is 2.92 times that of `NH_(3)` gas. Determine the molecular weight of that gas.

Text Solution

if the rates of diffusion of the unknown gas and `NH_(3)` gas at constant temperature and pressure are `r_(1 ) and r_(2)`, then according to Graham's law of diffusion,
`(r_(1))/(r_(2))=sqrt((M_(NH_(3)))/(M))`, where M=Molecular weight of unknown gas and `M_(NH_(3))=17`.
since, `r_(1)=2.92xxr_(2)`
`therefore 2.92=sqrt((17)/(M)) or, M=2`
therefore, the molecular weight of the unknown gas=2.
