Pig iron is the product of smelting iron ore (also limonite) with a high carbon fuel and reductant such as coke, usually with limestone as a flux. Charcoal and anthracite are also used as fuel and reductant. Pig iron is produced by smelting of iron ore in blast furnaces or by smelting limonite in electric furnaces. Pig iron contains at least `92%` Fe and has a very high carbon content, typically `3.5-4.5%`
Cast iron is one of the oldest ferrous metals in commerical use. It is primarily composed of iron (Fe), carbon (C) and silica (Si), but may also contain traces of sulfur (S), manganese (Mn) and phosphorus (P). It has a relaively high carbon content of `2%` to `5%`. It is typically brittle and non-malleable.
