No reducing agent is required in the extraction of copper - explain why.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the extraction of copper, the ore is at first roasted, followed by smelting, which forms the matte. The molten matte is then oxidised in controlled airflow in a Bassemer converter. `FeS` present in the matte is oxidised to `FeO` and `Cu_(2)S` is partially oxidised to form `Cu_(2)O`. Since `Cu_(2)O` and the remaining `Cu_(2)S` undergo self reduction and produces `Cu,` external reducing agent is not required.
