''The extraction of a metal from its ore...

''The extraction of a metal from its ore is actually the reduction of its compound'' - Justify the statement.

Text Solution

An ore is a compound of the metal from which it is extracted after its conversion into a oxide. In a metal oxide, obtained after extraction exists in zero oxidation state. This means, the metal ion present in the oxide is converted into a metal by accepting electrons. Thus, it is said that extraction of a metal from its ore is actually the reduction of its compound.
