Electrolytic reduction is preferred over...

Electrolytic reduction is preferred over chemical reaction for the extraction of certain metals - why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Highly electrpositive metals like `Na, K, Ca, Al` etc. form very stable oxides. These oxides cannot be reduced easily by carbon (chemical reduction). Although these can be reduced by carbon at higher temperature, the reduction process is not feasible and this is because at higher temperature carbon combines with these metals to form carbides. It is for this reason electrolytic reduction is preferred over chemical reduction for the extraction of such metals.
